Calico 50K
January 15, 2006
by Debbie Brown

I was in awe last year when I did the 50K at Calico and in awe again this year! The colorful mountains behind the ghost town were so beautiful and the course was constantly changing with very steep mountains, and roads with lot's of  whoop tee do's. I felt like a kid experiencing Disneyland for the first time! It surprised me to experience such rugged terrain. It was a lot more difficult than the Wild Wild West in Lone Pine was for me.

I was excited to have been  in on the very first Ultra at Calico and am now challenging myself to be there every year, "come hell or high water"! This year's weather was cold and windy which was a real drag for my family that thought they would have fun at the campground. As you know , when you get your blood running after a few miles, you don't really notice the weather. Well, until I was at the top of the tallest mountain and some wonderful volunteer was attempting to point us in the right direction as I was laughing while being blown sideways! It was great!

With the terrain making abrupt changes on every turn, I didn't notice the miles. But, I think I need to confess the other reason I didn't notice was because my friends Carol Wolfe and Sher Davis and I were talking the whole way. In fact my jaw was more tired than my legs! BUT NOT SO GREAT FOR THE WONDERFUL VOLUNTEERS! I kept thinking of how miserable they must be! I can't thank them enough. I just know that when I am unable to participate as a runner, I will definitely take my turn as a volunteer!
