Back to School Run/Walk
September 4, 2004
Ridgecrest, California
By Jenny McLaughlin
Thirty-eight runners and walkers participated in the Back to School Run/Walk early Saturday morning of Labor Day weekend. The weather was just about perfect: cool for September with a very slight breeze. The approximately two and one-half mile course rambled, zig-zagged, and undulated around the desert near Cerro Coso Community College, finishing with a jump over a gully and a short dash uphill. Among walkers, the first female finisher was Lori Schneider and first male was James Murray. The first female runner was Amy Cowie and first male runner was Miguel Rosales. All participants were rewarded for their efforts with graham crackers, cookies and ripe melon pieces. Thanks are due to Chris Rios, Ruby Dison, Nickki Dison and Ian Rawson for their help in marking the course, to Randy Klassen, Ruby Dison and Anthony Barnes for the timing and score keeping, and to Eric Kajiwara for sending the race announcement to the local papers.

Eric Kajiwara's Story

Keith ran a good race.  I heard he trained for it.  A novel concept.  I think training is overrated.  You need give some blood the night before the race and also buy some new shoes for the race.  I tried something for the first time this year's run.  Eating.  I had more energy the whole run (DUHH).  Thanks to my "Death Race 2004" crew and pacers.  Jo, Mark, Randy, Mitch and Elaina.  Elaina got the cattle prod out as soon as we hit the pavement (1 mile from the finish) so I was able to break 30 hours (29:46).  It was great to see other friendly faces at the aid stations like Ruth Carter, Pat Devita, Curtis Davis, Pam and Gary Kileen, Rob McNear, and Craig McClurg.  Weather was great.  Cooper Canyon was not bad tempurature wise.  The climb out was still a be-a-tch.  I got some small blisters, but nothing to compare with Randy's.  He just told me to suck it up and "run bitch".  Number 7 is in the record books.  Still don't know if I'm going for the 1000 mile award.  Give me a month.  I hate to let my crew down and ruin their fun because they like to party every year.

Keith Richards-Dinger's Story

Yes, I trained this year, seemed to help.  I think I'll pass on giving blood the night before, but I did do the new shoe thing
this year.  The first half of the race was great - spectacular sunrise, very clear air above the sea of clouds in the marine
layer in the LA Basin, nice and cool.  I was out of Chilao  (mile 53) in right at 12 hours elapsed time and feeling great, so I thought a 26 hour finish might be possible.  But then I did something to my left anterior tibialis.  With ibuproferen and dramatic changes to my downhill running form I was able to keep moving reasonably well as far as Chantry Flats (mile 75), but then I fell apart - no fewer than nine people passed me as I groveled my way up the climb to the Mt. Wilson Toll Rd. Still it is hard to be disappointed with taking 2:24 off last year's time (30:16 to 27:52).  Thanks to Curtis for crewing for me (and for pacing my little brother Eric in from Chantry - this was Eric's first attempt at a 100-miler and he finished just a few minutes after me in 28:18), it was a big help.   I'm still amazed at what a great, friendly group of people ultrarunners and volunteers are.

Yesterday and today my left anterior tibialis is just excruciating, does anyone have a doctor in town to recommend for this sort of thing?
