2003 Bay to Breakers
May 18, 2003
San Francisco, CA
Columbia P. Nelson
On Sunday, 18 May, my niece and I joined 70,000 others in San Francisco to walk/run the 2003 Bay to Breakers.  It was her first race and my first race since the 1998 LA Marathon.  Friday night we picked up our "yellow" bags and t-shirts at the Greater Body Expo.  Everywhere we went around San Francisco on Friday and Saturday, we recognized the other participants with their "yellow" bags.  The race organizers outdid themselves as they delivered 81' weather.  It was beautiful and clear for the race.  We arrived at the start 45 minutes early to be pelted by tortillas.  What a great introduction to racing for my niece!  Everyone in the race and watching it was friendly and the whole event was as colorful as I had been led to believe.  The racers who wore costumes and those who did not were as interesting as I had been promised they would be.  Some of those who did not, went home with sunburns they would regret.  The salmon team swam against the rest of the crowd looking for a place to spawn.  The Elvis' even had a toddler Elvis with them.  There was a French team running away from the race.  The race came to a stop to watch the Village People.

My niece and I had both trained alone.  I did not have the guidance from Chris Rios and John Anderson that got me through LA.  I figured since it was only a 12K, we could get enough water and even food at the aid stations so I didn't take my personal supplies.  Wrong!  There were not as many aid stations as LA and the ones along the race route had ounces of water and no food (bananas).  I brought plenty of water but not food.  We did fine until the last half mile and then it got very hard for me.  I won't make that mistake again.  My niece sprinted toward the end while I finished behind her.

We both had such a good time that she is ready to race again soon and certainly return to San Francisco next May.

Bolder Boulder

Bolder Boulder was Monday.  What an event.  48,000 runners starting in waves of 400-500 every minute.  Pat and I both did the race and really enjoyed not only running the race but then working the elite race afterwards.  We were in a position to see the runners 3 times, plus seeing the video of the entire race real time.  The organization was outstanding.

Pat jogged/walked the race in  about 1 hour 38minutes, and I was able to return to the start line and accompany her.  It was fun.

As a result of my good Carlsbad 5K time I was in the second wave.  I ran a 45:00 min race and that was good enough to win my age group.  There were 130 in my 61 year old age group.   I was pleased even though my good friend Tom Lemire from Boulder who is 59 ran a fine 41:50 (beating me) and easily won his age group. Fun time.
