In
the early spring of 1985, after the common era, the great Aztec God Quetzalcoatl
(Kay-zal-CO-atl) looked down on the desert hamlet of Ridgecrest and saw
that there were several running disciples known as “Habits of the High
Desert” (after habitual runners) who had chosen the name “OTHTC” (PRONOUNCED
ot-HA-zee). This being the name of his favorite cousin, Quetzalcoatl
decided to honor these disciples with a great leader.
Quetzalcoatl decided to call forth and send down his newly appointed archangel of running, George (gay-OR-gay) Sheehan, to choose and deliver this new leader. He instructed George to seek out this leader in the Valley of the Girls (San Fernando Valley) and specified that the leader must arrive on Cinco de Mayo in keeping with tradition.
George went forth and found “Chris of Many Rivers,” known locally as Chris Rios. The problem was that he was married to a very talented and strong willed woman known as Debbie. After consulting the Gods, it was decided to move Debbie to the Naval Weapons Center. The most difficult part was to convince the managers at NWC to hire Debbie because they seldom took advice, even from their masters in Washington, D.C. After much physic sub-conscious cajoling, Debbie accepted employment at the Naval Weapons Center, and of course we all know that a man will follow a valley girl anywhere. Chris and Debbie arrived in Ridgecrest and China Lake on precisely Cinco de Mayo 1985.
And so it was that Chris was elected “El Presidente” of OTHTC. And Quetzalcoatl was happy with what he observed, and before resting, he blessed OTHTC so that it would have many years of success and prosperity.
This story should be passed on to future generations of Habits.
Congratulations to the 12 local runners who participated in the LA Marathon.
