Carlsbad 5000
by Tom Miller

After hearing great stories from Corky Furnish and Tom and Dianne Rindt about the Carlsbad 5000, Joe Oliver and I decided it was time to try some speed work again.  So the OTHTC was well reasonably represented in the Carlsbad 5000 Masters Division races.  I have to say the race was all it was made out to be.  Where else can you run a 5K with 1000 others in your Masters category.  That's a 1000 in the Mens and 1000 in the Womens.  We sure don't see crowds in Ridgecrest like that.

It was a little tough trying to have speedy legs at 0705 on the first day of daylight savings time.  But the mens race got started right on time, ready or not.  Joe and I were fortunate to have Tom Rindt coach us at the start line to stay wide to the right of the crowd until we got around the first left turn at about a quarter mile.  In fact I followed Tom's advice so well that it wasn't until about a half mile into the race, when Joe went zooming by me, that realized I had actually been ahead of Joe for a half mile.  This was definitely a first for me.  Unfortunately for me, at the one mile mark I realized how hard it is for me to breathe at a 6:30 per mile pace.  But the day was cool and it was motivating to see the leaders heading back on the turnaround, and so I kept running.  Also at the first turnaround, a little more than a mile into the race, you have a great ocean view as well.  That is a fine running vista.  Then just about the end of the race Dianne was there on the sidewalk to cheer us all on.  It really helps to see local friends.

So the OTHTC results for the Mens Masters were,
Joe Oliver  19:27  5th of 73 in his age group.  Still fast.
Tom Miller 20:44  46th of 196 in his age group.
Tom Rindt 23:07  47th of 126 in his age group
Then it was our turn to watch the Womens Masters race and cheer on Dianne.  No matter where you stand you get to see the runners a minimum of two times during the race.  Joe and I watched from about the one mile mark and cheered Dianne as she had a great time of 24:49 to finish 4th of 60 in her age group.

Finally it was time to watch the reallllllllllly fast runners.  I actually saw what a human looks like running a 13:17 5K.  They sure make it look easy, but fast.  The Womens Elite race was really special to watch while Deena Drossin broke the womens world record for a 5K road course, in an incredible 14:47.

And if having a great run isn't enough Tom and Dianne shared their way of enjoying breakfast while race spectating.  The Armenian Cafe is right on the course with a deck overlooking the course and the Pacific Ocean.  Now that is living.  So thanks Corky, Tom and Dianne for sharing such a great place with us.

I am looking forward to next year already.

Ed Cornell
April 7 2002

Ed Cornell, competing for Burroughs High School, placed 10th in the state in the last regular season rankings for the discus throw with a toss of 175’1” in a dual meet on 25 April.  Ed’s father, OTHTC member Gill, states that Ed is the only 15-year-old sophomore on the list and that colleges are interested.

Burroughs can lay claim to another title this week, more specifically Eddie Cornell, who became the California Interscholastic Federation’s Division III Discus Champion Saturday.
In an effort that put him among the elite of the Southern Section, Cornell threw for a distance of 165-4 to win the division and place 12th overall in the section.
Cornell just missed moving on to the Masters event as a sophomore.  The top nine places moved on—meaning he was just under three feet away from the trip.

Congrats to Mark McKinney, Eric Kajiwara, Curtis Davis, and a Ridgecrest runner that I met on the trail for finishing the Leona Divide 50 Miler.  I can't remember his name (see below).  Sorry.  I believe he is new to Ridgecrest.  Jo Kajiwara ran about 29 miles as a training run.  Randy Klassen ran 42 miles and dropped.  The ever-tough ultrarunner Lisa Bennett, attempting her first 50 miler and only her second ultra, made it past the 42-mile aid station, but I don't know if she finished.  No matter--she toughed it out on one of the toughest 50s out there.  I ran 38 miles and dropped.  Just not enough training miles for this tough 50.  Congrats to all for toeing the line.

By Curtis Davis

Chris, the Ridgecrest runner you met on the trail was Keith Richards-Dinger.  Congrats to everyone who ran.  My feet hurt.

By Lisa Bennett

To Set the Record Straight, Mr. Chris.  Lisa Bennett absolutely DID finish Leona Divide 50 Miler!!!!  In 12:33:31 to be exact.  I opened a can of "whoop ass" up there on the mountain and let it fly!!!  And finished in flying colors!  Right now, all I have to say is that is one BAD ASS ultra.  I really had NO idea what I was getting into, but I finished and am elated that I did!

Oh, yes . . . one more record to set straight.  That was my third ultra.  I've done Ridgecrest 50K, San Gabriel 50K, and now Leona Divide 50 Miler.
