The race with a knockout punch.  It was a beautiful day for a Half Marathon.  We had three walkers/joggers start out an hour early.  They did a fine job, with lots of walking and a little jog now and then.

I heard it said the two leaders battled it out.  Bryan Ogilvie out in front for most of the course, with John Shillings hot on his heels.  John didn’t get ahead of Bryan until the start of the downhill on top of the ridge.  Bryan couldn’t catch him but was very close.  In third with a fine time and looking good, was Eric Frisbee.

On the women’s side, we had a new face at this club event, Jennifer Johnson. Jennifer went out fast and by the end of the race no other women were in site.  It was a fine performance, and we hope we will see her again at our events.  Close behind in second place was another Jennifer, Jennifer Williams, also running very well.

I think all had a good time, with sunny skies, and a good day to run a half through our rolling desert terrain.

Blackhorse Marathon
Fort Irwin, California
19 November 2001
By Carol Wolfe

The Blackhorse Marathon at the Ft. Irwin Army Base outside Barstow is a small, friendly event that Chris Rios, Andrew Mitchell, and I drove to over the weekend.  Elaine Riendeau and her husband Larry (who photographed the event) also drove down.  Although the course description and map led us to believe it was a flat and easy course, it was anything but!  There were more long upgrades in that run than you could shake a stick at, and it was primarily on asphalt.  There were some spots where a person could run on the shoulder but not a whole lot.

Mitch and I battled it out with Elaine most of the day.  Elaine and I ended up finishing together in 4:49 with Mitch at 4:50.  Chris finished a short time later.  Mitch, Elaine, and I all ended up getting age group awards, which thrilled us to pieces!
While running on the Army post, we saw numerous tanks, troops, and helicopters.  The course is actually marked with soldiers!  Not a single ribbon or chalk mark to be found.  I found it to be patriotic and inspiring, especially in these troubled times after the terrorist events in our country.  It occurred to me often during the run that only because people like these soldiers are putting their lives on the line for our freedom we even have the privilege of running in marathons.

After the run, we hobbled in and out of In & Out Burgers.  I don't know who was more sore.  I ran the race with two giant blisters on the outside of each big toe thanks to my new Nike Air Max's, which are going back!  Chris had muscle cramps, and Mitch was just plain old worn out.  Elaine was the only one who looked fresh and chirpy.  Oh, and should I mention she is 7 months pregnant?  (That robbed any glory I had in catching up to her toward the end!)

OTHTC Turkey Trot
Thanksgiving Day, 2001

On the drive to the race many of us were in gale force winds and blowing sand. In spite of this, about 230 runners showed up. Surprisingly the wind was fairly calm at Cerro Coso Community College where the run was held.

We don't pay much attention to who placed where and how fast did they run for this low key fun run, but Jerrad Zurn finished first to capture the coveted of the rubber chicken award for this year.  He was followed by Brian Ogilvie and then Coach Anthony Barnes.

Everyone seemed to have a good time greeting friends they hadn't seen in a while, and former Ridgecresters returning for the holiday.
