Ridgecrest runners do well again!
On Saturday, August 19th, 4 runners from Ridgecrest entered the Tehachapi Mountain Festival lmi/5K/I0K run, and ran away with several prizes. Our local entrants included Kathy Martin (5K), Mike and Jerry Mumford (10K), and Mel Miles (10K). Of the estimated 250 entrants, three of our runners took prizes: Mel Miles took second in his age group, Jerry Mumford took first in her age group (great for coming back from 3 foot surgeries!), and Mike Mumford took second in his age group (the rest of the fast guys just keep getting older).
No times were given: Mike was about 9th overall (about 42 minutes), and Mel and Jerry both finished in about 55 minutes. We didn't get a time on Kathy, but we knew that she finished well (also coming back off injuries).
It was just about the best conditions we've seen over there for this race: cool, a light wind, and drier than normal. The only drawback was when the shepherds decided to move the sheep away from the race course just as the runners came by: dust, smell, and bleating. Then again, maybe the bleating was just whining by the runners...
My time was 6:33 - 4:08 to the top and 2:25 down. I had
a good run, and I did like the course although I was worried that I didn't
have enough long runs. The long hikes turned out to be more important
than the runs. I may even do it again.
