Regarding the Timing Errors at the Finish Line

Thanks to everyone who helped us out by sending in their times. Some people seemed to be very sure of their watch times and others had an idea that they were "about a certain time" faster than the "official" clock time. Fortunately the guesses at the times mostly fit in with what the people who were confident and exact about their times, so we had a bunch of data that mostly fit in.

The reported time errors are plotted on the chart below relative to the finish times. The time seems to have gotten off somewhere between 4:27:00 and 4:31:30. The official time is then about 1 1/2 minutes slower than most of the reported times until at least 5:22:37. Then somewhere between 5:22:37 and  5:36:56 the times get off by over 10 minutes. Most of the reported times indicated that the official times were off by 11 to almost 15 minutes from about 5:37 until almost 6:00. Somewhere between then and 6:18 the time error came down to about 5 minutes and mostly stayed about 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 minutes off through all of the reports that we got.

There seem to be a few other inconsistencies in the timing as well, that make it impossible to redo all the race time in an accurate manner. We therefore will keep these listed as the official times, but you can look at the analysis presented here and draw your own conclusions as to what your actual time was.

One important time needing reconsideration is that of Wally Hesseltine who had a very accurate time on his watch, and who set a new record for 60 year olds. The error at that time was also verified by a couple of other nearby competitors who also had accurate finish times on their watches. His official time and new 60 year old record for the event will be listed as 4:29:55.

Sorry we can't get a better fix on the timing problems, we'll try to do better next year - promise.
